Sunday was a big day for broad-winged hawks at Duluth’s Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory. A total of 26,270 broadwings passed over the ridge on Sunday during Hawk Weekend Festival activities. Mid-September traditionally marks the peak of the broadwing migration.
Conditions were just right on Sunday with westerly winds following a rainy and nearly windless day on Saturday.
Although Sunday’s 26,270 broadwings represented a big flight, it was far from the record flight of broadwings over Hawk Ridge — 101,716 on Sept. 15, 2003.
