Andrew Slette of Hawley, Minn., has set Minnesota’s first catch-and-release state record for muskellunge. He was fishing with a top-water lure on June 25 when he hooked a muskie that measured 56 7/8 inches long with an estimated girth of 25 1/2 inches on Pelican Lake in Otter Tail County.
This is the first year that catch-and-release records can be established for three species in Minnesota. Earlier this summer, the first catch-and-release records were established for sturgeon and flathead catfish. The flathead catfish record already has been broken. Jacob Robinson of Shakopee, Minn., caught and released a catfish that measured 49 inches long and had a girth of 32 1/2 inches. It was 2 inches longer than the previous record.
Guidelines differ for each type of record, and application forms are available at mndnr.gov/recordfish.
