National Trails Day Activities Planned

Saturday is National Trails Day, and several local groups are planning activities and projects that day. Here are some National Trails Day activities scheduled:

  • COGGS (Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores) will hold a trail-building project from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hartley Park. Meet at the intersection of Norton Road and Howard Gnesen Road.
  • The Duluth Cross-Country Ski Club will be working on trails at Lester Park from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Meet at the parking lot next to the first bridge on Seven Bridges Road. If you plan to help out, email the club by Thursday at info@duluthxc.com.
  • The Superior Hiking Trail Association will hold two free, guided hikes near Finland on Saturday.. Meet at 10 a.m. at the Finland Recreation Center on Lake County Road 7. The long hike is 7.6 miles, Sonju Lake Road to Finland Recreation Center. Short hike is 4.6 miles, from the rec center to Egge Lake and back. No registration required.
  • The North Country Trail Association’s Brule-St. Croix chapter is offering two guided hikes on the North Country National Scenic Trail near Solon Springs.  At 9 a.m., hikers can meet at K D’s Restaurant in downtown Solon Springs for hike on the Brule Bog Boardwalk. Enjoy a 5-mile round trip or shorter 2-mile walk into the cedar forest at the headwaters of the Bois Brule and St. Croix Rivers.  At noon, all are welcome to a potluck picnic held at the Palmer’s Landing/St. Croix Lake Trailhead, 4 miles northeast of Solon Springs off County Highway A. Bring a dish to share. At 1 p.m., the St. Croix Lake trailhead will be the starting point for a hike on the historic Brule-St. Croix Portage section of the North Country Trail, a 4-mile round-trip hike.
