When I last spoke to Duluth’s Dave Nelson on Saturday afternoon, he said fishing had been awfully tough on the St. Louis River in Duluth. He hadn’t caught a fish, and hardly anyone else had, either. That’s what I wrote for today’s Duluth News Tribune in a round-up of fishing action across Northeastern Minnesota.

But Nelson, who is president of the Twin Ports Walleye Association, said he wasn’t giving up. That evening, I received the photo above from Nelson. He had caught a 29-inch walleye later that afternoon on the river.

You’ve got admire persistence.

I also received a photo from Stan Panchott of Duluth, who caught a 41-inch northern pike that weighed 16.8 ounces. He caught it just before 7 p.m.Saturday on Moosehead Lake near Moose Lake. Below is a photo of Stan and his big pike.
