12-year-old’s First Lake Michigan Salmon Is A Big One

Catching up after being gone for a week, I came across an e-mail from Duluth’s Jude Oberg. His son, Don Oberg, is a charter fishing captain on Lake Michigan at Sturgeon Bay.

On Sept. 1, Oberg had a 12-year-old boy, Chev Parks of St. Francis, Minn., on board who caught his first salmon. The fish weighed 33 pounds on the boat and 31.6 pounds later in the day on an official scale on shore, Oberg said.It was thought to be the largest chinook salmon weighed in at Sturgeon Bay this summer.

Don Oberg has operated Leprechaun Charters on Lake Michigan for 25 years.

Here’s a link to a story and photo of the fish in the Door County Advocate newspaper.
