Far North Symposium Highlights Long-distance Canoe Trips

The annual Far North Symposium, which features presentations about canoe trips in Canada and Alaska, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Founders Hall at Metro State University, 700 East 7th Street, St. Paul.

The event is sponsored by the Minnesota Canoe Association, Cooke Custom Sewing, Canoeing.com, and Metro State University.

This year’s slide shows and video presentations traverse the North American continent, including a 2,600-mile journey from Alaska to Hudson Bay. Peter Marshall hopped watersheds, went up and down rivers and across some of the Arctic’s biggest lakes to complete the journey in four months. Hear his stories, plus tales from three other canoe trips that ended on Hudson Bay. And new this year, learn about the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, the canoeing version of the Appalachian Trail.

Tickets, $25 at the door or $20 if you register before March 21; $15 for MCA members before March 21; $10 for students, anytime.
