Ely And Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge To Be Seen On NBC

A dog team that runs for Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge in Ely, owned by Paul and Sue Schurke, will be featured on NBC’s “Today” show on Monday or Tuesday, according to a Wintergreen e-mail to the Duluth News Tribune today.

As Paul Schurke explains in the e-mail, Ely resident Gerry Snyder had sent a letter to President Obama, asking if he would contribute something to the Ely-Winton Historical Society’s time capsule. A few months later, Snyder received a hand-written letter from the president, which said in part, according to Schurke and the Ely Echo newspaper:  “Fifty years from now, I hope we have managed the balance between our energy needs and our need to preserve the planet so that the wilderness surrounding Ely remains as spectacular as you describe.”

NBC, hearing about that, sent a crew to Ely and shot footage of Snyder and also a Wintergreen dog team in action. The piece, Schurke said, will air Monday or Tuesday with coverage of President Obama’s second term festivities.
