Canada geese fly off Hartley Pond in Duluth before sunrise on Thursday morning.
I headed to Hartley Pond before sunrise this morning to get a sense of calm before plunging into the work day. I figured I’d find Canada geese on the pond, and I did. Two bunches of about 20 birds each were honking and preening as they prepared to depart for morning feeding. The dog and I waited on shore, and our patience was rewarded. The group of geese you see above flew just over our heads on their way out.
Getting to natural areas such as the pond a few times each week helps me keep perspective on the world, and it’s especially valuable in these times of economic uncertainty and the divisiveness of political campaigns.
