A friend who spends a lot of time in rural northwestern Wisconsin talking to contractors said they report seeing a fair number of ruffed grouse along the roads this summer. My friend thinks that might bode well for the upcoming grouse season.
I haven’t heard much yet from Minnesota, but I noted the following entry from this week’s Minnesota DNR conservation officer reports: "CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) reports that by early indications, the grouse season will probably be very disappointing in the northeast. (Fagerman) has seen very few grouse this summer and very few chicks."
I’ll do a complete grouse forecast for the Outdoors pages on Sept. 7, a week before the small-game seasons open.
