With spring run-off in full force, rivers are running wild and fast. This is a great time to check out some waterfalls. Here are a few you might want to consider:
r Try Big Manitou Falls, at 165 feet, the highest waterfall in Wisconsin. Its on the Black River that flows through Pattison State Park, 13 miles south of Superior on Wisconsin Highway 35.
r Right in Duluth, check out the falls at The Deeps on Amity Creek in Lester-Amity Park. Amity Creek and the Lester River join under Superior Street. Amity Creek comes in from the west side. Follow a trail upstream along Amity about one-fourth mile. A wooden bridge crosses the creek just above the falls.
r Chester Creek makes several dramatic drops between Skyline Parkway and Fourth Street, near 14th Avenue East. Follow a trail on either side.
r Gooseberry Falls State Park, 39 miles from Duluth on Minnesota Highway 61, offers five falls, four within sight of Highway 61. Park near the Visitor Center and walk up or down from there. No park sticker is required
r Amnicon Falls State park, 10 miles east of Superior, off U.S. Highway 2. Two waterfalls are found on the Amnicon River, with hiking trails on both sides of the river and a footbridge, too. Park sticker required.
r Want to make a weekend of it? Drive to the High Falls on the Pigeon River at Grand Portage State Park (150 miles from Duluth, just before the Minnesota-Ontario border). The falls are about 120 feet high and accessible to people with disabilities. Park sticker required.
